“…and every Allied government gave me a decoration — even Montenegro, little Montenegro down on the Adriatic Sea!”
Little Montenegro! He lifted up the words and nodded at them — with his smile. The smile comprehended Montenegro’s troubled history and sympathized with the brave struggles of the Montenegrin people. It appreciated fully the chain of national circumstances which had elicited this tribute from Montenegro’s warm little heart.” —F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
I’m off tomorrow for a trip through the Balkans that will even take me to even little Montenegro for a day or two, along with four nights in Amsterdam and one in Venice. Other than the obligatory (for me) layover in Reykjavik and a brief visit to Amsterdam in the past, the bulk of the trip will be to places I’ve never seen in person or photos, although I have a feeling that Dubrovnik at least will seem familiar from an episode or two of Game of Thrones.
If any of you have traveled to any of these spots and want to suggest places I must visit, whether a national park, secluded shore, or just a great coffee shop, please let me know.
I’m hoping to do a better job of corresponding on this trip instead of just planning to mail postcards and never getting around to it, so if you want a postcard from the trip, send me an e-mail and I’ll do my best to get one your way.
I hope you all have some adventure planned for your summer and take the chance to see one place you’ve always wanted to but always made excuses to miss or eat one meal, whether intimidatingly grand or frighteningly rustic and humble. Each might just be the best trip or meal of your life.
Get out there!
Highly recommend Rovinj! And in Venice, make a trip out to Torcello or San Lazzaro.
I loved Rovinj! It was a real highlight of the trip.
